WordDescription
Carbon reduction:A reduction in an organisation’s carbon footprint from one period to another. A carbon reduction can relate to either an absolute reduction in total emissions or a relative reduction in emission intensity.
Carbon reporting:An organisation may report its carbon emissions at the voluntary or regulatory level.  At the voluntary level, an organisation may include their carbon measurement in their Annual Report or CSR Report.  Regulatory reporting includes Government sponsored schemes e.g the EU Emissions Trading Scheme or the forthcoming Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) in the UK.
(Carbon) sequestration:The process of long-term storage of atmospheric (gaseous) carbon dioxide in a solid material through biochemical or physical processes. Examples of such process include formation of limestone from calcium oxide and underground storage in saline aquifers.
Carbon sink:A process or system which removes carbon from the atmosphere and stores it for an indefinite period. Examples of sinks include forests and oceans.
Carbon Tax:An environmental tax on emissions of carbon and other greenhouse gases.  It levies a fee on the production, distribution and use of fossil fuels based on how much carbon their combustion emits.  The carbon tax therefore encourages the use of clean or renewable energy sources instead of fossils.
Carbon:A chemical element found in all living material. In climate change literature it is often used as shorthand for carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases e.g.   “carbon emissions” is often used to mean greenhouse gas emissions.
Climate Change Agreements (CCAs:)To assist those organisations affected by the CCL, the CCA exists as negotiated agreements between industries and government for additional CO2 reduction targets.  In return, companies meeting these targets receive an 80% discount from the CCL.
